This Net facilitates public access to Internet, fosters ditigal literacy and promotes the
organization of citizen nets.
Since 2001, the Asturian Telecentre Network provides Asturian society with public and free
services in the field of Internet and the ICT.
The regional government of the Principality of Asturias, in collaboration with Asturian Local
Councils and CTIC Foundation, is boosting the greatest telecentre network in Europe. 85 telecentres
are already functioning, with more than 75.000 registered users, in an attempt to introduce
Asturian citizens in the Information Society.
Telecentres aim to democratize access to Information Society, paying special attention to the
population living in rural areas and providing the less-favoured groups (unemployed, disabled,
elderly, students, etc…) access to the information technologies and Internet.
Telecentres are not only acting on people but also on the territories as tractor agents,
provoking changes and improving existing infrastructures. This democratization process of the
Information Society is leading to the fact that, regardless of the orographic complexity of
Asturias and population factors, remote rural places have now access to infrastructures and are
making their way towards the "global village".
