CTIC consolidates its position as a technological center of reference

CTIC's indicators support its scientific, technological and economic solvency, and attest to its growing impact.
The center, which specializes in artificial intelligence and emerging digital technologies, closes fiscal year 2025 with a budget execution 15% higher than planned

CTIC arrives at the meeting of its Board of Trustees at one of the strongest scientific-technological, institutional and economic moments of its trajectory; with a reinforced European positioning, an undisputed national leadership in technological excellence, new strategic infrastructures, a strong multi-sector impact on the regional business fabric and a result that exceeds the expected target.

European leadership

The technology center has established itself as a key player in attracting European funding for Asturias. Between 2021 and 2025 it managed to attract 10.1 million euros from the Horizon Europe program, of which 6.6 million went to CTIC's own activity and 3.5 million to 13 other Asturian entities that participate in the consortia led or promoted by the center. This contribution represents 26 % of the total funds raised by the region in Pillar 2 -high impact collaborative projects-, which places CTIC as the main European fund returner in Asturias in this field.

In 2025, the center obtained the approval of four new multiannual European projects, reaching a total of 18 initiatives in the period 2023-2025. This dynamism has a very significant economic impact on its budget and demonstrates its ability to diversify its funding sources, reinforcing both its economic-financial stability and its sustained growth.

2025 also marked a strategic breakthrough with the launch of three new unique infrastructures, financed by SEKUENS from ERDF funds, in the fields of industry 5.0, human-machine interaction and energy. These infrastructures expand the center's capabilities for research, experimentation and technology transfer. With its start-up, CTIC reinforces its offer in advanced technologies for companies and completes a circle that combines national excellence, European leadership and direct service to the productive fabric.

National recognition

At national level, CTIC has consolidated its position as the Spanish technology center with the highest number of CERVERA Excellence awards, an indicator that measures excellence and strategic specialization in key technological areas. These networks cover areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, renewable energies, smart mobility, industry 5.0 or digital health, positioning the center as a reference player in the national innovation agenda.

CATIC currently participates in nine networks of excellence, three of them recently approved and to be developed in the period 2026-2028, with a budget injection of more than 2.9 million euros. This recognition granted by the CDTI not only validates the quality of the center's work and its solvency to mobilize high-impact projects projecting its specialization towards the Spanish productive fabric, but also strategically positions it at the forefront of disruptive technologies at European level.

Tangible impact

The impact of CTIC on the Asturian economy is not limited to fundraising, but is especially reflected in the effective transfer of technology. Since its creation at the end of 2003, it has accompanied more than 25,000 companies in processes of digital transformation, incremental innovation and disruptive innovation. Annually it maintains a direct impact on more than 1,700 companies, mostly Asturian, contributing decisively to regional competitiveness.

In addition, through CTIC RuralTech and its territorial offices, it has extended innovation to sectors and SMEs traditionally more distant from technology, generating sustained impact and contributing to territorial cohesion.

Center growth

CTIC expects to close 2025 with a budget execution of more than 6.3 million euros - 14.64% more than planned - and a productivity of 93,499 euros per person. This figure is well above the national average for technology centers (85,075 euros), which is evidence of its high competitiveness and efficiency in generating value, bearing in mind that this value comes entirely from the knowledge and qualifications of the team that makes up the center.

This growth is based on efficient internal management and prudent use of resources. Fixed costs account for 84% of the budget and are mostly allocated to a highly qualified staff. The center employs 70 professionals, 77 % of whom are university graduates in various disciplines, an indicator that reflects its scientific and technological essence and forms the knowledge base that drives its work in applied research.

The center's economic model is characterized by technological specialization, multisectoral work and diversification in the origin of funds. In 2025, 91% of the revenues were of competitive origin and, of these, 64% came from outside Asturias, a clear indicator of its national and international positioning.

CTIC is the Spanish technology center with the highest number of CERVERA Excellence awards and the first Asturian returner of Horizon Europe funds in collaborative projects.
