Avilés Ciudad Digital drove the implementation of the information society in the municipality of Avilés, with complementary measures in Carreño, through the creation of citizen-oriented services and infrastructure.

The project was part of the e-Europe 2005 Community initiative and aimed to promote and implement the information society in a local environment, with measures focused mainly on Avilés.

Avilés Ciudad Digital was structured around the following areas:

  • Infrastructure: creation of public internet access centers, funding of equipment and connectivity for households, and wireless access zones in public spaces.
  • Services: a citizen participation platform based on 3D technology, port procedures for the ports of Avilés and Gijón, citizen procedures, and services for SMEs, with grants for e-commerce websites and for value-added ICT services over broadband.
  • Training and outreach: measures linked to digital literacy processes.

CTIC carried out the project with funding from the Dirección General de Modernización y Sociedad de la Información of the Government of the Principality of Asturias.
