BCCB explored the feasibility of using distributed ledger technologies (blockchain) in market applications that could bring real advantages to individuals and businesses, developing a system on a blockchain platform to gather case data and produce design and application recommendations.

The project responded to the need to test, beyond the theoretical interest that distributed ledger technologies had aroused, whether they delivered real and tangible advantages and benefits in specific market applications.

The project's objectives were to:

  • Explore the feasibility of using blockchain technologies in a range of market applications.
  • Develop, on a blockchain platform, a system that would make it possible to identify the range of possible application cases.
  • Produce design and application recommendations based on the results obtained.

BCCB was structured around the following areas:

  • CarTrustChain, vehicle life cycle record: a distributed application on the Ethereum platform aimed at combating odometer fraud in second-hand vehicle sales, by tamper-proof recording of the kilometers driven and allowing owners and authorized third parties to consult them.
  • LiftsOnTheBlock, predictive maintenance 4.0: a distributed application focused on monitoring elevators using IoT sensors, which automatically recorded maintenance events and alerts on the blockchain, without human intervention, and allowed maintenance companies and building communities to consult the incident history.

CTIC carried out the project on the Ethereum platform, using smart contracts programmed in Solidity, and validated the feasibility of blockchain technology through these two case studies, achieving all the expected results: the design and implementation of a system for recording and querying transactions on a blockchain network, fed by both users and sensors, and the launch of that network.
