According to the "Estrena Active Aging Strategy, Principality of Asturias 2018-2021", Asturias has one of the oldest populations in Spain, with more than 20% of its population over the age of 65 and an expected increase to 33.10% by 2031. On top of this aging, perceived health progressively worsens as age increases. Both aspects were addressed through the e-Health Mission, whose essential goal was to apply digital technologies to prevent the onset of the chronic diseases with the highest prevalence in the region and that limited active aging, understood as a process that evolves throughout a person's life.
A holistic approach to health was thus taken, using digital technologies as the backbone of intervention. Analyzing and validating the potential application of technologies, whether combined in the form of medical devices or used on their own, made it possible to meet the needs of the population at every stage of life, taking into account the prevention of pathologies associated with aging, as well as reducing the incidence and prevalence of chronic diseases with a clearly proactive approach to active aging.
Within the Mission, e-Health proposed as an applied pilot project the use of digital technologies to reduce chronic pathologies associated with back pain from adolescence to old age. Specifically, this pilot focused on improving the treatment and continuous monitoring of a condition present in adolescents that, if it progressed or was not detected in time, could cause severe problems throughout the patient's life, complementing the process of interaction with the patient with assistive robotics and telemedicine technologies.
