ELDERCISES developed a home-based geriatric exercise system that offered older adults personalized exercises based on their daily level of physical activity, in order to delay the onset of frailty syndrome and maintain their motor independence. The system combined a wearable device to measure physical activity with a smart platform that suggested exercises through a TV interface, which was in turn connected to a computer vision system that guided and evaluated the user while performing them.

ELDERCISES's purpose was to create a home-based geriatric exercise system that would offer older adults personalized exercises based on their level of physical activity, in response to the social and cultural barriers that reduce adherence to in-person geriatric exercise programs and to the progressive loss of physical capacity associated with aging and frailty syndrome.

The project's objectives were:

  • To study and design a monitoring architecture to measure the user's physical activity inside and outside the home.
  • To study and design a home exercise platform, with an exercise collection broad enough for users with different physical conditions to take part.

The core areas of ELDERCISES were:

  • Physical activity monitoring: a wearable device to measure the user's level of physical activity inside and outside the home.
  • Personalized exercise platform: a TV interface that suggested exercises adapted to the user's physical condition and daily activity level.
  • Computer vision: a system that guided and evaluated the user while performing the exercises.

CTIC developed ELDERCISES, a home-based geriatric exercise system based on wearable devices, a TV-based exercise platform, and computer vision.
