FOODIE (Farm-oriented open data in Europe) was a cloud platform that made spatial and non-spatial data available to the European agri-food sector in an interoperable way, facilitating planning and decision-making in precision agriculture through the integration of existing open data sources.

The agri-food sector, of strategic importance to the European economy and society, faces the challenge of managing heterogeneous information sources. The proliferation of different data models, formats, interfaces, and reference systems hindered interoperability and slowed the adoption of precision agriculture.

The objectives of the project were:

  • To create a cloud platform where spatial and non-spatial data from the agricultural sector would be available and interoperable for agri-food stakeholders.
  • To integrate existing open datasets related to agriculture.
  • To offer high-value applications and services to support planning and decision-making.

FOODIE was built around the following pillars:

  • Data infrastructure: a cloud platform for publishing and linking agricultural data from external sources.
  • Collaboration network: an infrastructure for interaction among the different players in the agri-food sector.
  • Third-party exploitation: opening the platform to SMEs so that they could develop specialized services by integrating the available data with their own sources.

CTIC took part in the FOODIE consortium, contributing its experience in open data and standardization to the construction of the platform.
