Under a collaboration agreement between Sabadell Information Systems, part of the Banco Sabadell group, and CTIC, both organizations carried out a joint R&D line on blockchain technologies applied to the banking sector, with particular attention to the Ethereum platform.

The framework agreement, signed on October 31, 2017, gave rise to a specific agreement focused on blockchain technologies and, in particular, on the Ethereum platform and its banking applications. CTIC contributed its knowledge and experience in this technology, backed by previous developments such as the Blockchain for Consumers and Businesses (BCCB) project and the CarTrustChain distributed application on Ethereum, as well as its status as a member of the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance.

The objectives of the collaboration were to:

  • Define and develop case studies and proofs of concept on blockchain technologies applied to banking activity.
  • Improve the employability of young university talent by providing training and hands-on experience in blockchain.
  • Showcase the collaborative work carried out between both organizations.

The collaboration was structured around the following areas:

  • Banking case studies: definition by Sabadell Information Systems of specific cases on which CTIC studied and developed proofs of concept.
  • Development of distributed applications: as a result of this line of work, CTIC developed RockMyBlock, a dApp for ticket sales using tokens issued by the bank, validated at a real concert in June 2018.
  • External outreach: dissemination of the joint work through industry forums such as the LIRA Network, promoted together with other banks.

Banco Sabadell and CTIC are also members of Alastria, the multisector consortium promoted by Spanish companies and institutions to establish a semi-public blockchain infrastructure, in which Banco Sabadell held the vice presidency at the time and CTIC operated one of the network's nodes.
