ISAAC was the project to acquire a supercomputing infrastructure for quantum computing simulation, with the capacity to emulate a quantum computer of 38 logical qubits, the largest in Spain. Its deployment gave CTIC the computing power needed to pursue a strategic line of activity in the quantum field, and it is the foundation on which the QUTE emulator is developed.

ISAAC was part of the Asturias Program supporting Technology Centers and Technological Innovation Support Centers in the Principality of Asturias 2018-2020, specifically its Action 2, devoted to key infrastructure for existing or strategic lines of activity.

The objectives of the project were:

  • To equip CTIC with a supercomputing infrastructure suited to simulating quantum circuits and algorithms.
  • To reach an emulation capacity of 38 logical qubits, the largest in quantum computing in Spain.
  • To enable the development of a strategic line of activity in quantum computing, generating computing power for the benefit of the research community.

CTIC carried out the project in its entirety, defining the technical requirements of the infrastructure and handling its acquisition and installation. In parallel, and with its own funds, CTIC developed on ISAAC the QUTE quantum computing emulator, a general-purpose simulation platform used today by Spanish and international research institutions.
