MIRA addressed a specific limitation of existing remote assistance tools: the remote expert was relegated to watching the screen feed provided by the non-specialized operator on site, with no real ability to intervene in the process.
The objectives of the project were:
- To develop a remote assistance format in which the expert could take the initiative during the maintenance or repair procedure.
- To maximize the capabilities and operability of the expert technician through immersive technologies.
- To speed up repair and maintenance tasks at critical facilities, minimizing downtime and travel costs.
The areas on which MIRA was built were:
- Digital twin immersion: the remote expert was immersed, through virtual reality, in a digital twin of the facility, able to move freely through it and consult relevant data in real time to speed up diagnosis.
- Mixed reality annotation: the instructions and annotations made by the expert on the digital twin were reflected at the corresponding position in the real facility, from the point of view of the operator on site.
- Two-way collaboration: a new remote assistance format in which communication between expert and operator was improved compared to conventional tools.
CTIC developed the MIRA solution, which represented a technological advance over the limitations of existing remote assistance tools, under Open Call #3 of the European project XR4ALL.
