OpenParkia was a joint project by CTIC and Seerstems Robótica y Sistemas to develop an intelligent parking assistance system for urban areas, which told users their optimal parking spot at any given moment by combining artificial intelligence, edge computing, LoRa networks and open data.

OpenParkia proposed the development of an intelligent system to make parking easier in urban areas, telling users their optimal parking spot at any given moment, thus ending the wasted time of extra driving in search of a free parking space in places such as shopping centers, busy streets or technology parks.

To this end, a joint project was set up that revolved around the combination of artificial intelligence, edge computing, LoRa networks and open data technologies, which made the system efficient, fast and scalable, as well as enabling transparency and informed decision-making on the use of public space.

CTIC collaborated with Seerstems Robótica y Sistemas, S.L., the project's coordinating company, on the development of OpenParkia, contributing its experience in artificial intelligence, edge computing and data opening. In its first phase, the system was deployed in a pilot parking lot at the Gijón Science and Technology Park, using image capture equipment able to stream video in real time and analyze it to identify free spaces and generate a visual availability map.
