A Decentralized Identifier (DID) is a portable, unique and global identifier. It is based on associating a URL to an entity, meaning any element with its own independent existence: a person, an organization or an IoT device. DIDs are the infrastructure that enables the existence of Verifiable Credentials and self-sovereign identity systems. They facilitate a more secure and private identity management, reducing dependency on centralized and vulnerable systems.
